Faculty
Dr. Amal Mattu, FAAEM,
FACEP,
is currently Associate Professor and Program Director in Emergency
Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Since
completing emergency medicine residency and a teaching fellowship,
Dr. Mattu has rapidly become one of the leading educators in
emergency medicine in topics pertaining to emergency cardiology and
geriatric emergency medicine. He has authored or edited four texts
pertaining to high-risk emergency medicine and emergency
electrocardiography (http://giantsteps-em.com/Textbooks.htm).
Additionally, he is the first emergency physician to serve as
primary Guest Editor for volumes of Cardiology Clinics and
Clinics in Geriatric Medicine, and he is the Consulting Editor
for Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America. Dr. Mattu
is a frequent speaker on the national and international CME circuit
and has been invited to lecture in more than 10 countries on topics
pertaining to emergency cardiology and geriatric emergency
medicine. He has been a featured speaker for Audio-Digest
Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Reviews and
Perspectives (EMRAP).
Dr. Mattu has received more than a dozen teaching awards, including
national teaching awards from ACEP and AAEM, and in 2000 he was
selected as Teacher of the Year from among the entire faculty of the
University of Maryland at Baltimore. He had the distinction of
being named Residency Director of the Year in 2006 by the AAEM
Resident and Student Association. In addition, Dr. Mattu had the
honor of receiving the 2006 ACEP Rookie Of The Year and Outstanding
Speaker Of The Year awards, and in 2007 the Maryland Chapter of ACEP
named him the Maryland State Emergency Physician of the Year. |

Dr. Ghazala
Sharieff, FAAEM, FACEP, FAAP,
is currently the Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine for
Palomar-Pomerado Health System and California Emergency Physicians.
She also serves as Associate Clinical Professor at Children's
Hospital and Health Center/University of California, San Diego. She
is double boarded in Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency
Medicine. Dr. Sharieff has published numerous chapters, original
research papers and review articles in the field of pediatric
emergency medicine. She worked as assistant editor for the
pediatric section of the latest edition of Harwood Nuss’ Clinical
Practice of Emergency Medicine and has published a QuickGlance
handbook on pediatric emergency medicine. She is active on the
editorial boards for the Journal of Emergency Medicine,
Pediatric Emergency Reports and Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Practice. She has served as a board member of the
American
Academy of Emergency Medicine and was co-chair of the AAEM Education
Committee for five years.
She is currently the Chair of the American
College of Emergency Physicians’ Pediatric Committee, which leads
the way in directing the acute care of children. Dr Sharieff has
lectured at multiple conferences nationally and internationally and
is often featured on Audio-Digest Emergency Medicine and
Emergency Medicine Reviews And Perspectives (EMRAP). She is
well-known for her engaging and enthusiastic teaching style. Dr.
Sharieff has won many teaching awards including Best Overall
Instructor from the San Diego Naval Hospital Emergency Medicine
Residency Program, The AAEM Young Educator of the Year Award and the
ACEP Service to Section Award.

Dr.
Joe Lex, FAAEM,
has been involved in
Emergency Medicine for almost 40 years, initially as an Army medic
with the 25th Infantry "Tropic Lightning" Division in Vietnam. He
spent several years as an Emergency Medicine Technician and
Certified Emergency Nurse before beginning Medical School at age
35. After an Emergency Medicine residency, he was a community "pit
doc" for 14 years before joining the staff at Temple University in
Philadelphia. He was Chair of Education for the American Academy of
Emergency Medicinefor five years. The AAEM honored him by renaming
the Educator of the Year award the "Joe Lex Award." He has been an
invited speaker at more than 180 conferences regionally, nationally,
and internationally. He has been a featured speaker numerous times
on Audio-Digest Emergency Medicine, Practical Reviews in
Emergency Medicine, and Emergency Medicine Reviews and
Perspectives (EMRAP).
Among his honors are the Vickrey Award
for Outstanding Contributions to Emergency Medicine Education from
York Hospital, the Excellence in Teaching Award from Temple
University Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program, the
Outstanding Educator Award from University of Maryland Emergency
Medicine Residency Program, the Visiting Professor Award from the
Department of Emergency Medicine, Mayo Medical School, the Holt
Award for Student Leadership from the University of Texas Health
Science Center, San Antonio, and the Combat Medic Badge for service
in Vietnam. Dr. Lex serves on the Editorial Board of EMedHome (www.emedhome.com)
and is an Advisory Board Member for the Foundation for Education and
Research in Neurological Emergencies (www.ferne.org).
His extensive involvement in International Education has led to
numerous distinctions, including honorary memberships in both Polskie
Towarzystwo Medycyny Ratunkowej and Sociedad Argentina de
Emergencias.

Mallon.
William K.“Billy” Mallon,
FAAEM, FACEP
William K. “Billy”
Mallon is one of the best-known names, faces, and voices in
Emergency Medicine. He attended medical school at The University of
Massachusetts, and then completed his residency in Emergency
Medicine at Los Angeles County / University of Southern California
Medical Center, where he stayed on faculty and rapidly rose to
become residency director. Since then, he has published dozens of
articles and chapters, and was primary editor of the PEER VI Board
Review Question and Answer book. Among his awards and honors, he
was selected as “Residency Director of the Decade” at LAC+USC and
Outstanding Teacher at USC Medical School. He received a National
Faculty Teaching Award from the American College of Emergency
Physicians in 2002, a Fulbright Senior Scholar Grant in Aid, and is
a graduate of the Gorgas School of Tropical Medicine in Lima, Peru.
